Indy Arms Has Been Proud to Host IDPA Indoor Tier 1 (Club) Matches in the Past

Indoor IDPA matches have been indefinitely suspended at Indy Arms.  We highly recommend many of the available outdoor matches offered throughout the state.

International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Tier 1 (club) matches in the past were held on the fourth Sunday of the month October through March.  Registrations (payment) would open at 5:00pm and would close at 5:30pm, new shooters meeting would be at 5:30pm (mandatory if you have not shot at a previous Indy Arms IDPA Match), registration and shooters meeting would be at 5:45pm (mandatory for all shooters), and first shots would immediately occur after the meeting (~6:00pm). Note:  late entries were not accepted, you needed to be registered, paid, and present at the start of the mandatory meeting(s)s to participate

Matches included a minimum of 4 stages, with a suggested round count of 80-100 rounds, and would conclude around 9:00pm.  Matches cost $20 with a strict limit of 32 shooters.  Signup (pre-registration) was first come, first served and conducted through Practiscore (https://practiscore.com/clubs/indy_arms_company_idpa).  Matches opened for pre-registration Sunday, 8:00am EST, one week prior to the next match.  Walk-ins were accepted only if registered shooters have not checked in by 5:40pm the day of a match.

Set up will took place starting at 4:30pm the day of a match, contact the match director if you wish to volunteer.

2023- Schedule

  • Currently we are not offering future IDPA matches at IAC

Shooters need to have an understanding of and clearly demonstrate skills of safe firearms handling including: Drawing from a holster, trigger finger discipline, reloading, unloading and showing clear, re-holstering, and maintaining muzzle discipline at all times including following the ‘180 rule.’  Shooters will need to join IDPA by their third match at the latest (and are encouraged to join the Indy Arms IDPA club on the IDPA’s webpage: https://www.idpa.com/clubs/indy-arms-company-idpa and follow the Indy Arms IDPA club on Practiscore: https://practiscore.com/clubs/indy_arms_company_idpa) .

New shooters are encouraged to participate, but the skills needed to compete safely are best obtained during non-competition practice and courses such as Indy Arms’ Tactical Handgun I, II, & III or similar classes or experiences.

Competitors need to abide by and be familiar with all IDPA rules as well as bringing an IDPA legal firearm & holster, spare magazines, magazine pouches, ammunition, concealment garment, and eye & hearing protection.

All challenges to scores must be brought to Indy Arms attention within 48 hours of score’s posting.

Indy Arms IDPA Safety Brief:

Welcome to IDPA at Indy Arms Company! We’re glad you’re here! You can be comfortable with your safety on our range. Basically, there are 2 sets of rules:

  1. The game rules, with time added to score – minor
  2. The safety rules with DQ – serious & draconian

A Safety Officer (SO) will be assisting you; a SO’s two primary jobs are:

  1. 1. To oversee and command the safe operation of your weapon
  2. 2. To assist the shooter – They are here to help you!

Safety is our first concern. IDPA runs a “cold” range. All weapons are unloaded and have an empty mag-well all times. You will only load your gun when the Safety Officer instructs you to do so. You will NOT handle your gun at ANY TIME during the match or when preparing for the match unless you are under the supervision of a SO or in a designated Safe Area (In the Training Room). You may handle your unloaded firearm ONLY in the Safe Area without the supervision of a SO when you “gear-up” for the match. NO AMMUNITION IS ALLOWED IN THE SAFE AREA. When in doubt, please ask a SO before handling your firearm.

IDPA has a formal set of commands used while shooting a course of fire (COF). These help provide the safest environment possible. Failure to follow the commands of the SO can lead to disqualification. Additional things that will result in disqualification include:

  1. Endangering yourself or anyone else with a loaded weapon
  2. Discharging a firearm during “load and make ready,” “unload and show clear,” reloading, holstering, malfunction clearance, or prior to the start signal.
  3. Any shot impacting the side walls, floor, or ceiling
  4. Grossly unsafe and/or belligerent behavior
  5. Repeated safety violations or failure to correct finger or muzzle on command
  6. Dropping a loaded or unloaded weapon
  7. Violating the 180 rule.

We never want to disqualify anyone, but it does happen on occasion. A DQ does not mean you have to leave; it simply means you cannot shoot the remainder of the match.

You will be instructed by the SO as to the muzzle “safe points” of the 180 rule which includes side to side as well as up and down. Please keep your firearm parallel to the ground, pointed downrange and your finger alongside the frame at all times you are handling your firearm and not actively shooting. Also, although you may go as fast as you like while shooting safely, you are not being timed to load, show clear or holster. Please take all the time you require to perform these tasks safely. Please holster your weapon at the request of the SO and wait for his “Range is Clear” command before you retrieve any ammunition or magazines.

Standard Range Commands:

  • Range is hot – eyes and ears
  • Load and make ready
  • Are you ready?
  • Stand by….
  • If finished, Unload and show clear
  • If clear, slide forward or close cylinder
  • Pull the trigger (not needed for revolvers)
  • Holster

Safety Issue Commands:

Finger, Muzzle, STOP

After the “Stand by” command, you may not move until the timer beeps. The timer beep is your indication to safely draw your loaded weapon and start shooting.

If at any time during a COF you drop a loaded gun, DO NOT pick it up. The SO will pick the gun up and return it to a safe condition.

If at any time during a COF you fall down, STOP SHOOTING and do not move. Ensure your finger is off the trigger and keep the muzzle pointed downrange while you await instructions from the SO.

IDPA Rules (Procedurals)

Engaging Targets: Each CoF will include how many rounds must be shot to ‘engage’ a target.  Failure to do so will result in a procedural penalty.

Reloads:  You may discard empty magazines on a slide-lock reload, any loaded magazines (tactical reload) must be retained

Tactical Priority: Your SO will explain any ‘planes’ of targets; if multiple planes are visible at the same time you must engage near to far

Slicing the Pie: When shooting from cover you engage targets as you would see them as you ‘roll out.’  Typically, this means engage targets from the outside in.

Fault Lines: Cover shooting positions will include defined ‘fault lines.’ You may not have any part of your feet touching the floor outside the fault line while engaging targets from cover

Please ask questions. Lots of questions. We hope you enjoy your first IDPA match with Indy Arms, and many more to come!
